How to start employer-paid CDL training

  1. 1

    Choose a vehicle and role

Compare IndyGo's bus academy with Continental Express' Class A school. Ask which license class, endorsements and test vehicle match the position you want.

  2. 2

    Check the applicable age rules

Indiana BMV allows property transport within Indiana from age 18 and requires school bus applicants to be 21. FMCSA sets the general interstate driving minimum at 21.

  3. 3

    Get your permit requirements

BMV's permit page lists the knowledge exams for your vehicle and equipment, plus medical certification requirements. Ask the sponsor whether a CLP is needed before hiring and who pays each required expense.

  4. 4

    Verify the registered instruction

FMCSA covers first-time Class A/B applicants, B-to-A upgrades and first-time passenger, school bus and hazardous materials endorsements. Match your location and required theory and driving courses in the registry.

  5. 5

    Review pay and funding terms

Plainfield describes free CDL classes and paid aide work during training. For a school grant, DWD requires an eligible applicant and qualifying course; get the funding decision or employer agreement before making plans.

  6. 6

    Finish the skills test process

Indiana BMV requires a CLP held for 14 days before the skills exam. The exam includes vehicle inspection, basic controls and road driving at an authorized site.

Indianapolis metro wages for truck and bus driving

In the Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood, IN metro area, BLS OEWS for May 2025 estimated 20,480 heavy and tractor-trailer truck driver jobs (53-3032), with a median wage of $29.80 per hour and $61,980 per year. For school bus drivers (53-3051), BLS reported 4,020 jobs and a $23.99 hourly median. Transit and intercity bus drivers (53-3052) accounted for 960 jobs, with a $29.55 hourly median.

These occupations have different schedules and vehicles. The figures describe employed workers across the metro, not a trainee wage or an available vacancy. Compare each written offer's paid hours, route schedule and service terms before accepting employment.

Tuition coverage, wages and remaining CDL expenses

Continental Express advertises schooling at no cost to the trainee. Ivy Tech Hamilton County lists $5,495 for the upcoming DriveCo class, or free training for qualifying Next Level Jobs students. Confirm a grant award and any uncovered charges before registering.

Paid training can still leave expenses to you. Brownsburg's guide says the district pays the drug test and physical, while applicants pay for the BMV permit and license. Ask every employer about retests, medical exams, travel, required service and repayment after leaving. For WIOA assistance, WorkOne Indy reviews your eligibility, course and available funds; WorkOne Central handles training inquiries in surrounding counties. Ivy Tech specifically says its listed DriveCo course is not Workforce Pell eligible, so confirm the exact funding program instead of assuming FAFSA covers it.

Questions before accepting CDL training

  • Will I earn Class A or Class B, with which endorsements?
  • Which registered location handles theory and driving instruction?
  • When do paid hours begin, and how are training payments issued?
  • Must I hold a permit before you hire me?
  • Who pays for licensing, the medical exam, testing and retests?
  • What service period or mileage commitment is required?
  • What would I owe if I leave or cannot finish?

How to check a school

Common questions

Is employer-paid CDL training completely free?

Coverage depends on the offer. Continental Express describes its schooling as no cost to you. Brownsburg assigns permit and license charges to the applicant despite providing training and paying for the physical and drug test. Ask for an itemized list of remaining expenses and any repayment terms before signing.

Does school bus training also qualify me for tractor-trailer work?

Check the license class and endorsements. Lawrence Township describes Class B instruction with passenger and school bus endorsements. Continental Express teaches Class A. FMCSA requires applicable entry-level training for a Class B-to-A upgrade. Compare the course and test vehicle with the type of driving work you plan to pursue.

How old must I be for paid CDL training?

Indiana BMV sets age 18 for transporting property within the state and age 21 for school bus operation. FMCSA's general rule requires age 21 for interstate commercial driving. An employer can publish additional hiring requirements, so check the specific position before you pay for permit preparation or a medical exam.

Can I get tuition funding without accepting an employer's driving job?

DWD's Workforce Ready Grant covers tuition and fees for qualifying certificate programs. Its eligibility rules include Indiana residency, U.S. citizenship or eligible non-citizen status, and a high school diploma or equivalent with less than a college degree. Some programs require FAFSA. Have the provider confirm the course, your eligibility and an available award before enrolling.

What should I check in the FMCSA registry?

FMCSA's provider guide says to search by training type, location and provider, then ask about fees and class availability. Check theory and behind-the-wheel instruction for your license and endorsements. The provider submits completion to FMCSA. Registry listing does not tell you the employer's paid hours, service commitment or repayment policy; obtain those separately.
